TOURNAMENT ORGANIZATION
Detailed information about JO tournaments can be found on the Internet at http://www.carolinaregionvb.org/Misc/faq.htm
This directs you to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section of the Carolinas
Region organization. Look for the section, "Tournament Questions."
The basic information is that teams are grouped into "pools" which usually
consist of four or five teams. You play a match against each team in the pool over the
course of the day. (A match consists of two or three games depending on how many teams are
in the pool.) When a team is not playing, it is either assigned to referee a match for
other teams in the pool or the team "sits" out that time slot.
TIME
The team's coach is required to be in the coaches' meeting beginning promptly at
8:30 a.m. Teams in the first match start warming up at this time, also. The first match
begins at 9:00. The length of the day all depends on how well the girls play. The teams
with the most wins in each pool play in a playoff round to determine the tournament
champion. The pool play usually ends around 5:00 p.m. The championship of the playoff
usually ends around 8:00 p.m.
TRAVEL
Past experiences have proven it is best to travel in a caravan, in case anybody has a
problem on the trip. It is also good to share cell phone numbers to keep in touch in case
of an emergency!
PARENT INFORMATION
The purpose of JO volleyball is to teach players fundamental skills of volleyball and to
have fun. We want players to build friendships and create a sense of camaraderie among
themselves. Parents should do this, too!
Team spirit is a very important element of play. To this end, we ask parents to offer
encouragement and cheer us on with positive remarks. Please don't discourage a struggling
young player or team with negative remarks! Winning is great but a positive experience is
more important at this point in time.
Pannix JO coaches are not paid, although some of the clubs we play against do pay their
coaches. Pannix coaches are individuals who care about your children and genuinely love
the sport of volleyball. Please treat them with courtesy and respect. If you have a
Concern, please talk with the coach privately or contact Marty Woods at McMichael High
School.
PLAYER INFORMATION
JO tournaments are a great time to build friendships. Be prepared to share
everything throughout the day. Being flexible is an important trait to have while playing,
whether it is on the court or off. Winning requires a team effort!
ITEMS TO TAKE TO A JO TOURNAMENT
Players will need:
Required by
league rules!
Volleyball shoes
Uniform shirts (pack both)
Uniform spandex pants
Suggested
Items:
Knee pads
Extra socks
Sports bras
Plastic bag for stinky, sweaty clothes and shoes
Clean clothes to wear home
Note: You may wish to wear pajama pants or other comfortable pants you can wear over
spandex
(not jeans!). It is nice during the day to be able to layer clothes while you are not
playing. Be comfortable!
Items
to make sitting time comfortable:
Sleeping bag to spread over the floor
Pillow
Blanket to cover up with
Playing cards
Portable CD Player
Stuffed animals
Note: Sitting is one of the best parts of the day. It can be a good time to socialize with
friends or
watch other teams play. When packing "fun stuff" remember what you bring you
have to carry,
so leave the kitchen sink at home! As you can see, a big duffle bag is helpful, if you
have one.
Parents will need:
For watching
games:
Portable chairs (bleachers are not available)
For creature
comforts:
Layers of clothing (some schools are cold)
Lots of snack foods
(Players need fuel! Suggestions: Granola bars, grapes, bananas, crackers,
gummy fruit snacks, dry cereals)
Lunch foods and beverages
(Most people carry coolers or go to nearby fast food restaurants to bring back
sandwiches. The girls won't have time to leave for lunch!)
Bottled water for players
Trash bag (please leave the host school clean!)
Napkins, plates, utensils
Newspapers, magazines, books, etc. to help pass the time when we are not playing
You may want your own sleeping bag to rest on!
